The image "The Unknown Rebel" is a politically and culturally significant representation of the power of people, power of the government, military etc. The image taken 5th June 1989 depicts a lone individual standing in the way of a column of Chinese tanks preventing their advance during the Tiananmen Square protests. At the time much of the truth of communism was being hidden from western audiences. This image would have been quite confronting as it shows the reality of what was going on in these communist nations.
The use of juxtaposition in the image creates a clear distinction of the levels of power. Just the size of the man compared to the tanks highlights this. The tanks look very dangerous and foreboding representing the might of the military and government, while a simple, lone, unknown man stands as a testament of the power that each of us have as individuals.
The vectors in the image also help to show the power struggle on display. The tanks are all neatly placed in a line representing the uniformity and conformity of a communist regime. The lines in the image, from the row of tanks and the road lines draw the eyes of the audience towards the man showing his significance and his great power despite the forces at play around him.
